Is that the end of a beautiful friendship? And is it my fault?

Remember Tommy and Java? Remember how gorgeous they are together? Well…

Last night, 2nd night Seder, everyone had arrived, we were about to sit down at the table to begin the Seder. I pulled out the enormous bone I’d bought for the puppies, expecting them to share, like they did everything else, and I placed it in Tommy’s mouth. It was so big it stuck out at least 10″ either side of his jaw! Well, he was a very happy chappy, and proceeded immediately away from the house, up to the farthest point in the back garden. Little Java, who always shared everything with Tommy, her bestest friend, went to join in the fun.

And that’s where it all went awry. Tommy wasn’t going to be in it. He growled at Java, and she scampered off, no doubt hurt and offended, but definitely scared silly. I did give her a chicken neck all to herself, but that didn’t seem to make any difference. Oh, she ate it happily enough, but she won’t go anywhere near Tommy now, and he won’t even so much as look at her. He turns his head away, and goes off to protect and chew on his bone some more.

Poor little Java is absolutely terrified. She’s been hiding all day. We finally found her down the side of the house, all covered in dirt and mess, and when I tried to take her outside again, she wouldn’t go. She’s terrified, won’t go near him at all.

When Java first came to us, she was such a timid little thing. Wouldn’t go near other people, in fact she’d make a bee-line for our back gate across the whole length of the park if she felt she wasn’t safe. We’d be walking and talking in the park, and she and Tommy’d be running around, and then we’d look around to find them, and we’d just catch a glimpse of her running full-pelt home . We figured she’d been abused as a puppy, and I always assumed it was by humans. Now I’m beginning to wonder if it wasn’t perhaps a big dog that had snarled at her or something. Who knows. I just hope this is only a temporary broiges.

this is as close as Java will get, a quick u-turn gets her headed for safer ground
