Can I live in Portland, OR this Saturday?

If I could, I’d sure go to Elizabeth Hartman (aka. Oh, Fransson!)’s class on machine quilting! Here’s my first attempt…

Not so good, right?

I had my machine set correctly, I think, so what went wrong???

I think you've got the wrong foot on there. You need a darning foot with the feed dogs dropped down.
The walking foot is more for straight line quilting, it will do gentle curves but for complete circles you really need that darning foot.

    • Hi Clair, you'll laugh. I hope. I actually am using the darning foot (I've changed the caption on the image above after reading your comment). I actually thought "walking foot" was the same thing, and that it was called by this new name now, 35 years after I'd bought my old machine. I thought that because people don't "darn" anymore, it was given a more modern, upbeat name, ie. "walking" foot. How funny is that! Do I feel silly? Ah… yep! :$

I don’t think I’ve changed the presser foot pressure when I’ve done it.

Either way it looks like a tension problem, maybe try increasing the tension on your top thread?

    • Rachel, my sewing machine guy told me to do that. I'll try messing around with the top thread tension and presser foot pressure and see if I can get it right. Meantime, I'm happily hand quilting :)

  • Don't be afraid to play with the tension! Every thread is a little different and when you're machine quilting you may find you need to adjust it everytime you change the thread. It also makes a difference if you have a different kind of thread in the bobbin as you have in the top. Fiddle with it! The worst that can happen is you make it too tight and the top thread breaks. Then you back it off. No big deal. It's only thread! Live dangerously!
