A return to dressmaking

You may – or not – have noticed that a new little topic found its way onto my navigation bar above. I thought it’s high time I returned to dressmaking. I used to love it. I’d go out on a Saturday morning, scrutinize the pages of the big Vogue Patterns catalogue books, searching for the right pattern. I only ever used Vogue Patterns. I was a bit of a snob about it. I liked their layouts, and instructions. Guess I wasn’t confident enough in my own ability and knowledge to deal with anything that wasn’t perfectly laid out. So, after pouring over the Vogue Patterns magazines that I’d accumulated, I’d hightail it into the city (usually), and head straight for Buckley’s in Bourke Street. Once I’d chosen the pattern, I’d find my fabrics – lining and interfacing included if required – along with all the notions I needed, and head back home, armed with everything I needed to completely finish the garment I was making.

Then, I’d begin. I lay the fabric out on the carpet, pin the pattern pieces to it, and cut. After that, there was no stopping me. I’d work straight through any meal times, and often into the evening and through midnight if I had to. I wouldn’t stop till it was completely done. Sleep also was sacrificed if it was a longer project. But in the end, I’d try it on, parade it to Moshe if he was up, and enjoy the accomplishment before doing anything else at all.

Thank god I’m not the only one like that! I mean, you understand, right? Anyway, I used to love it, so I decided I’d give it a shot again. This time though it’ll require a bit of restraint. No all-nighters! Think I might start with this pattern. It’s a Very Easy Vogue number, should be quick and easy. By the way, can you see how old this pattern is? The phone number for Spotlight stamped on the front doesn’t have the “9″ that was added in front of our numbers quite a while ago. And see the price on the back? A steep AU$4.50!

Think I’ll make View B, the one with the front pleat. And long-sleeved. I have a gorgeous piece of Liberty Tana Lawn that has been waiting patiently in my cupboard. What do you think?

And when that’s done, I should have received this trench coat pattern I bought on eBay, so I’ll be able to get started on that!
