Made it to Markit @ Fed Square

Markit

Markit

I really didn’t think I’d make it to Markit @ Fed Square today. Moshe has just come home from his surgery on Thursday – he’s fine, it was minor, he’s recovering – and our Brisbane friends were coming to town to have yum cha with us, if Moshe was up to it. So it didn’t look good. Then I had a brain wave. Have yum cha – he was up to it – then take him home to rest, and we’d go to Markit! That’s exactly what we did. Our friends loved it! And so did I. It’s the first time I’ve been, and I was so very impressed with what I saw.

The very first stall I saw as we entered the BMW Edge Theatre was Pippijoe. Such a lovely surprise to meet Caitlin! I didn’t know she’d be there. I adore her fabric designs! And although I had my money marked to spend at Ink & Spindle, I just had to get one of Pippijoe’s fabric basket kits. I’ve wanted one for ages. It was a toss-up between Nests, or the Laundry Birds.

I think I should have bought the Nests, but I have wanted those laundry birds for such a long time, I just had to get them!

I then made a beeline over to Teegs and Lara’s stall, and had another moment. The navy or the dark red? I went for the red. They launched this fabric today, and it’s beautiful! All expectations fulfilled. I only had enough cash left over to buy a small piece of this fabric, but it’s perfect for one of my bag projects.

I wish I’d taken heaps of pictures to show you, but I was busy hanging out with my friends, and seeing all the amazing, amazing, amazing things that were on the tables. I’m marking my calendar to go again next year. I’m telling you, Melbourne is just doing incredible things!

I did come home with a huge stash of business cards and shop paraphernalia, so I have heaps of online browsing homework to do.

Next stop will be this Thursday at the next Melbournalia pop-up shop launch. It’s Parlour time! I’ll have my camera out this time, promise. See you there?

Congratulations Melbournalia!

I’m so impressed by my city. Melbourne is emerging as an innovative leader in promoting its immensely talented and creative band of artisans and craftsmen and women, and for me, Melbournalia Fancy Goods and Postal Service sums it up. It’s elegantly modern, yet edgy at the same time. It’s inspiring, like a ray of sunshine, creating a lovely warmth that wraps around and nurtures. This is pop-ups at their very best.

Can you tell I loved it? Days ago, when I first received the message with this invitation, I knew I should go. For a start, it just sounded really intriguing and very interesting, and besides, Lara and Teegs from Ink & Spindle were going to be there (they were only makers I knew from the whole list), and I wanted to show them my bag that I’d made from the fabric I bought from them at their recent birthday event.

So last night, I took the train into town, walked across to Elizabeth Street, took the tram up to Franklin Street, and walked towards the Queen Vic market, looking for No. 124. As I walked, I passed a little lane, and as I turned my head to the right, I saw the Melbournalia sign down the end. Found it! I turned up the alley, turned left, and walked through this door and up the stairs to the event.

So, here are some pics I took. Hope they portray how fabulous the event was.

Only two things to say now…

1. Go see all 4 pop-ups!

2. An online shop is opening up soon too! Yay! Although I really prefer going to the actual pop-ups. They’re fabulous!

Hope you enjoyed this post. Isn’t it just so inspiring, what Melbourne is up to?

The storm rolled in with a fury!

Here’s what the sky looked like on our street, minutes before the storm broke. It was short and …sweet? Don’t know if that quite fits! But you know what I mean.

How funny is Moshe’s wishful thinking? Immediately after I took that video, we took the dogs inside, and sat down to dinner in front of the open blinds, and watched as the heavy rain and hail descended in bath-loads. By the time we got to eat our dessert (Gita cooked last night, we had mock chocolate mousse made with avocado), you could see tiny patches of blue sky peaking through the much quieter clouds, and although I think it pretty much rained all through the night, it was more like a regular old storm than any majorly threatening beast.

I hope we’ll have more social-friendly weather tonight. Going to the Melbournalia Fancy Goods and Postal Service launch in Franklin Street. Anyone else going?
