Birthday gift forces a sewing event

Well, he gave me an iPad for my birthday! Moshe was more excited about giving it to me than I was to receive it. And I was very excited to receive it! He got me one with the lot – 64gb, 4G ready, all juiced up, as he said. And see the little speakers and a neat attachment thingy that’s for getting my photos off my camera and onto my iPad? They’re from Gita. I was so spoilt this year.

Gee, look who's on the screen! Yay! It's Austin! Took me all of 4.32 secs to load him up!

The very next morning, we went out and bought one of those brilliant Apple concertina covers. After much deliberation and many trips up and down the escalators at Chadstone, I picked the red leather version. A portion of the proceeds from every red cover purchase goes to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. So, done. It’s perfect. Slim, multi-functional (also serves to clean the screen beautifully), and well… it’s red.

However, it doesn’t cover the back, only the front screen. Hmmm. A problem. But no, not really, right? Here’s how I handled that issue…

The front - it's that gorgeous piece of Ink & Spindle fabric I bought last year

Recognize the lining? That's right, it's from my Japanese Fans quilt! I love it!

And there's my iPad peeking out! It fits nicely even with the red Apple cover on, although I tend to leave it off when I pack it away

I was so annoyed that I didn't have a nice thickish roll of round elastic in my drawer, until I remembered that set of hair elastics I didn't like much! bingo!

And here's the back. How gorgeous is that fabric! You should feel it, so soft to the touch. Perfect!

I padded it all out with beautiful bamboo batting, which gave it a really nice loftiness, without being too thick or bubbly. If you want to see more of the outer fabric, here’s a link. It’s Lara Cameron’s stunning Leuca in Red Orange & Stone.

I love the slimline design, fits easily and unobtrusively into my handbag. You wouldn't know it was there!

Now, what did I give Moshe for his birthday? I’m glad you asked. You know we share our birthday, yes? Both on the same day, three years apart? Well, I managed to finish the top of the quilt I’m making for him. He liked it. I think. I think he was way more into how excited I was about my new iPad than he was into his quilt. I don’t have any good photos yet to show you of Moshe’s quilt, but I will soon.

Do you like it? It’s one of the designs in Kaffe Fassett’s book, “Quilts In The Sun“. You can click on each image to enlarge it, and click here to read the whole megillah, the making of…

Bloggers’ Quilt Festival

I’ve just stumbled across Bloggers’ Quilt Festival, thanks to Patch Andi, and I’ve entered my Sarah’s Triangles Quilt. If you’re visiting from the Bloggers’ Quilt Festival, welcome to 25reasons!

Sarah's Triangles Quilt

Sarah's Triangles Quilt

This quilt is quite special. First because it’s so BIG! The quilt finished up measuring 85″ (216 cm) x 99″ (251 cm)! Second because I made it for my daughter Sarah, who watched keenly from the sidelines as I made this quilt, and  choosing some of the fabrics with me, beaming her excitement at me with her huge smile, all throughout the process. Third because it was a real challenge to quilt. I always knew I was going to hand-quilt this one, but when I got started by trying to pin the thing, I ran into such strife! I’d lay it down on the carpet to pin it, and then pick it up, folding it to be able to cart it to the couch where I was going to sit and quilt, but every time I did that, I ended up with huge folds in the backing fabric. So I tried all sorts of things. I lay it on the table, pinned it with even more pins, but still ended up with the same result.

In the end, I gave up trying. I considered hand-basting it, but it seemed like too big a job for me, so, although I was really hesitant about doing that, I looked at giving that job away to a professional, someone who could do it by machine. I felt bad about someone else’s hand being on my quilt. Sounds a little obsessive, but I think you know what I mean, right? Anyway, I ended up giving it away to be done, and I reckon it was the best money I ever spent! It came back to me with 3″ squares basted all over the quilt, and it was an absolute dream to quilt. I didn’t have to worry about whether it would have “pleats” in the back where I wasn’t holding the fabrics together properly, know what I mean?

I have to admit that when I finally finished the hand-quilting, and pulled out all the basting stitches, I felt good. Appreciative but happy that now only my handiwork was in it. Crazy? Yeah, probably. Would I have a large quilt machine-basted again? Definitely! You can read more about the making of this quilt here.

Here are some more images of my quilt. Can you tell Sarah’s crazy about her new quilt???

Guess whose quilt is all sandwiched up?

Gita's Chelsea Quilt

That’s right! It’s Gita’s quilt! YAY!! Did this last week. I’m so glad I left the tables set up after Pesach, so handy for things like this! The quilt is all pinned, trimmed, and ready for hand-quilting. Just need to sort out my Perle 8 colours, and decide on how I’m going to do this. It’s exciting for me to have just finished one daughter’s quilt, and have the second daughter’s quilt almost done too. Mind you, the hand quilting won’t get done overnight, but still, it’ll be finished “soon”.

Poppy and Dollies

Want to see my next two projects I’m starting? I know, you haven’t seen Sarah’s Triangles Quilt finished yet. I have a really good reason for that. It’s really a winter-time project. That quilt is big and heavy, and quilting the border (all that’s left to do before sewing on the binding) is a really big ask when it’s in the 20s and 30s here in Melbourne. And humid to boot! It’d do me in. So, that’s on the back-burner till it gets way cooler and I am confident I can breathe under it’s enormity and heaviness.

Gita’s quilt? Yeah, it’s not finished either, but that can wait a little I think. I need to sandwich it first, and then hand-quilt it in multi-coloured Perle 8s. I’ll do that after I’ve finished Sarah’s quilt. There’s an order that needs to be respected.

Now, my Liberty quilt hexagons are getting done in good time. I’m ahead, actually. I’ve done the next two weeks’ worth of blocks, so I have a little time up my sleeve. So, god forbid I should get bored, I’m going to start my Poppy Quilt that I’m making for a very dear friend of mine. It’ll be machine-pieced, so should go fairly quickly. I’ve shown you the fabrics before, haven’t I? Well here they are again, in case you don’t remember ;-)

Laura Gunn fabrics with Kona Solids in Charcoal

You know, I haven’t looked at these for awhile now, and taking them out again has reminded me of how much I adore this range. It’ll be so wonderful to work with them. I’m going to create 12″ blocks that I’ll join up into a queen-sized quilt. I have it all ready to go for Sunday’s Sit and Sew Day.

The other project I’m starting I just couldn’t resist. Trish brought in one of her newest ideas – so, so cute. A circle of dollies with little embroidered caps on their head, and ballet shoes, holding hands in a circle of solid pastel backgrounds, and then heaps of interesting bits going out from there. How could I pass it up? Well I didn’t. Here are the fabrics I’ve chosen. I’m using Kaffe Fassett’s new panels – they’re so pretty! And Judy from Amitié found me the perfect striped fabric for my borders.

Kaffe Fassett's new fabric panels, solids, and a gorgeous stripe

Beautiful, right? This one is all hand-appliqué, which I’m a little nervous about, not my favourite or best technique; and embroidery, which you know I really do love to do. So, here we go into 2011! Five quilts on the go. Well, that’s not including the quilting bee blocks. Not bad. How many are you working on right now?
