hope you had a wonderful Rosh Hashana like I did - cooked heaps, ate too much, laughed a lot, & had a great time with the family
Hi. It’s been almost a month I think since I last posted. It’s not that I haven’t been doing anything. I’ve finished one new project that fell into my lap a few weeks ago that I can’t show you till November because it’s something I made for a close friend’s son’s and his bride who is my second cousin’s daughter for their chuppah (canopy). It’s a little embroidered 8″ or 9″ square. I hope they like it, and I hope it’s not too out of place with the printed photo fun squares others have done. Not that anyone has told me to keep what I’ve made a secret, it’s just that I think they’d want it to be first seen at the actual ceremony. So, you’ll have to wait till the wedding is over before I can show you. I can tell you I created the design using elements I found in the to-die-for book, ‘Made in France‘. OK, here’s a sneak peek – - – - – - – >
I’ve also been working away at my raw edge circle quilt. I’m half way through the pinwheels! Woohoo! 24 down, 24 more to go! I’m thinking I might do some ties in the middle of the circles. Have to research that a little, see how effective that form of quilting is, and how to tie the knots so they stay tied up. Know what I mean?
The other things that have kept me busy this past month are my two new blogs. I decided I didn’t have enough blog space, and that this wasn’t the right venue for me to write about other things, so I’ve created ‘Musically Speaking‘ and ‘A List Material‘. I’ve placed buttons down the side here, so you may have already found these sites. The “A List” site is still very much in formulation, and I’ve found that the info I have to put up there is dated and not much fun yet. I’m looking forward to revisiting the places I’ve written up and taking fresh photos, and having more detailed notes to upload. It’s just a bit of fun.
The “Musically Speaking” site I love. I’m finding it very rewarding to have a site where I can write about the music side of my life. Keeps me motivated to play too. The practising habit hasn’t quite stuck yet, so it’s a way to keep me true, if that makes sense. Having said that, I need to make sure I get my practising time in today. I have a sore throat, and I’d really rather hop back into bed with a nice heat pack, some tea and honey, and my sewing. I’d do it too, except I have a dentist appointment at 2. Bummer!
Now, to address the subject of this post. I’ve been all inspired by the Fulham Road fabrics. Cathy had a bunch of them at our Sit and Sew Day with the Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild last Saturday, and she had different ones to what I’d bought, and I decided I really, really, really needed – you know that word? needed! – to go online and buy some more. Cathy’s unbelievably generous, and so very trustworthy too. She let me take her fabrics home so I could match them with mine, and check on the net to match the fabrics up better. I then opened up Photoshop, copied the little fabric swatch images from Pink Chalk Fabrics, created my own little mock-up design and played around with it till I was really happy with it all before purchasing, which I did! Oh heaven! Here’s my design guide. What do you think?
I want to make a quilt for our bedroom that isn’t all girly, even though I’d just love to make one that’s in all the beautiful pinks and mauves, I just don’t think Moshe‘d go for it. So, I’m opting for a more kinda smokey look, greys, browns, blues, with the warmth of burnt orange and wood colour, and just a bit of pink and mauve through the smokiness. Since the fabrics are all that gorgeous cotton lawn, this quilt should be super soft. I was also inspired by a quilt that Andi is making in the Anna Maria Horner voile fabrics, it’s so, so soft in hand! I’ll back it in a Liberty Tana Lawn probably, and hand quilt it for extra softness. Might even hand piece the diamonds. I’ll see how I go. Now, this isn’t a project for this year, hence my title. I’ll start it in the new year, and hopefully have it finished by the time we have a new bedroom. Either in this house, or some other. I am already picturing a lovely fireplace, big windows looking out onto a pretty garden, soft shot-cotton curtain, and bedroom furniture in a beautiful dark walnut, honey oak, or jarrah. Hmmm.
Don’t worry. I hear you. What??? Next year already??? You’ve only completed 7 (well, 8 if you count the chuppah square) out of 25 this year, what are you thinking, girl!!! My answer to all that is.. you have to look towards the future, don’t you? Well, I am, and this quilt is in mine!
OK, off to get some things done around the house.
