KitchenAid Mixer Cover

Corinne from Heart of Mary | KitchenAid Cover

Here’s my newest undertaking. I found this fabulous tutorial by Corinne on Heart of Mary while reading yesterday’s Sew, Mama, Sew!‘s blog post. Isn’t her cover beautiful? Make sure you click on the image to enlarge it. I’ve been wanting to make one of these for ages. My poor KitchenAid Mixer stands naked on the side table in my kitchen, and I just know I need to cover it up. I just never seem to get to that project. So now, it’s on My List.

I just need to choose some fabric. I need a metre of main fabric, and a metre of lining. Of course, what do I have plenty of in my cupboard? Heaps of ½ yard pieces. So I either need to get creative and join two bits, so I’ll have a kind of night-and-day effect happening, or… yeah, gotta buy some more. Which may not auger well for me at the moment. And of course, it’s not just my KitchenAid Mixer that needs some loving. I have a whole shelf of appliances to cover up. So, do I buy enough fabric to do them all? Make them all matching? Or doesn’t it matter?

Will talk to hubby and see what he thinks. To buy, or not to buy. That is the question.

PS. My apologies to anyone who read my post yesterday. Hubby was in the hospital having surgery, and it took hours before he even went in. I was a little disshevelled. All good now, bringing him home in an hour or so. But really, sorry for the mad ramblings of yesterday.

When the zero turns into a one

I looked through my 2010 project list yesterday, and thought I’d cull a few that just weren’t going to get done by the time 2010 went and 2011 arrived. A quilt, a couple of tablecloths, the ice cream social dress, and a new ironing board cover just weren’t going to make it. So, delete.

I am, however, left with a challenge tht makes me happy. Just how much can I get done before the end of this year? Here’s what I have in mind. I reckon I can get the following done. It’ll take some planning, but I’m going for it!

First, I want to finish Sarah’s Triangles Quilt. That’d be just silly if I didn’t get that one finished. I only need to quilt the border, albeit a queen-sized 8″ border, sew the binding on, and then pull all that basting stitch out, but I reckon I can do it.

Gita’s Chelsea quilt? Well, now that the top’s done, I need to sandwich it and quilt it, then put on the binding. I can’t quite see that getting done in time, but you never know, right? I will be quilting by hand, going around all the flower boxes with a nice turquoise/aqua, and then straight-stitching the rest of it. What do you think? It’s not that big. I might take that one on too.

Then there’s only my tablecloths. I have two unfinished cloths. I don’t think I will try to finish those before New Year’s, but then again, it’s machine sewing, and won’t take that long really. I’ll keep this one in reserve, and see how I go, but I doubt it. I only have two weeks for all this, and I’d rather get the quilts done. I have already made up enough of my Liberty Stars blocks for the next two weeks’ posts, so I don’t have to worry about them.

So here I go! Wonder if I’ll get it all done!

Can’t believe I’m actually washing my fabrics!

I’ve been quilting for about four years now, and sewing for over three decades, and this is the first time I’ve washed my fabrics before cutting and sewing them! I’m a little amazed at myself, but here’s the thinking. I’m making tablecloths and napkins!! They’re going to be in and out of my washing machine heaps of times, so I better have my dimensions right, and know up front if my fabrics will shrink or not. One thing I really don’t like is tablecloths that are too short. And I want my napkins to be a nice generous size too.

don't they look oh so pretty on my line?

I’ve been deliberating for awhile now about making cloths for my kitchen table using some of my favourite fabrics. Sounds like a perfect idea, yes? But I know that some time in the next year or so, we’ll be either building or buying a new home to live in, and I don’t know if I’ll be using the current rectangular table in my kitchen, or if I’ll have what we always planned to have in the kitchen – our beautiful custom-made square table. If that’s how it’ll go, then all these beautiful cloths I’m making now won’t be of any use. See my point?

Only thing that got me over the line today, got my hands scooping up the fabrics and dropping them into the machine and turning on the water, was the knowledge that sometimes I am just darn stupid, and I let my need to have things be perfect distract me from actually getting something done! I know I’m alone in this, I know you won’t have a clue what I’m on about, right?

So, I’m determined to sew something this week. It’s been w-a-a-a-a-a-a-y too long since I did anything, so I’m going to finish this cloth before Wednesday night. We’re having the immediate family over for Sarah’s birthday and my new cloth is going to be on my table!
