When the zero turns into a one

I looked through my 2010 project list yesterday, and thought I’d cull a few that just weren’t going to get done by the time 2010 went and 2011 arrived. A quilt, a couple of tablecloths, the ice cream social dress, and a new ironing board cover just weren’t going to make it. So, delete.

I am, however, left with a challenge tht makes me happy. Just how much can I get done before the end of this year? Here’s what I have in mind. I reckon I can get the following done. It’ll take some planning, but I’m going for it!

First, I want to finish Sarah’s Triangles Quilt. That’d be just silly if I didn’t get that one finished. I only need to quilt the border, albeit a queen-sized 8″ border, sew the binding on, and then pull all that basting stitch out, but I reckon I can do it.

Gita’s Chelsea quilt? Well, now that the top’s done, I need to sandwich it and quilt it, then put on the binding. I can’t quite see that getting done in time, but you never know, right? I will be quilting by hand, going around all the flower boxes with a nice turquoise/aqua, and then straight-stitching the rest of it. What do you think? It’s not that big. I might take that one on too.

Then there’s only my tablecloths. I have two unfinished cloths. I don’t think I will try to finish those before New Year’s, but then again, it’s machine sewing, and won’t take that long really. I’ll keep this one in reserve, and see how I go, but I doubt it. I only have two weeks for all this, and I’d rather get the quilts done. I have already made up enough of my Liberty Stars blocks for the next two weeks’ posts, so I don’t have to worry about them.

So here I go! Wonder if I’ll get it all done!

Held up by a bobbin

How do you like that! My workroom is all cleaned out, I’m so happy I finally got rid of all the junk, the piles of paperwork, scraps, rubbish, things that just got piled on top of other things over the past year, and now. It’s clean, clear, a really inviting place to create and sew and.. well, get things done.

Remember the scrapbooking paper jungle beast from 2009? Well really my entire room was like that. You couldn’t see a clear bit of desk or table, and the entire floor was piles of paperwork and all kinds of… stuff.

Here’s how it all looks now…

So here I am, up early, bright eyed and bushy tailed, as they say, and I figure I’ll get some sewing done. I figure I’ll finish off my tablecloth, so I can finally publish my first tutorial.

I have all my black strips of fabric for the border of my Simply Square Tablecloth ready on the table. I take out the cream cotton off the machine, and take out the matching cream cotton bobbin, and look into my bobbin case for black. Have I got one? No. And all the bobbins are full, so I don’t want to go over them with black, and I don’t have a spare one! I could go over one of them with a bit of black, but I can’t bring myself to do that. Crazy isn’t it. Do you do that too? I hate multi-coloured bobbins. I never know what’s underneath, and I just don’t like it. The shops aren’t even open today because of Easter Friday! So frustrating. Devorah’s coming over a 1pm, I’ll see if I can score an empty bobbin from her. I will get this project finished today, one way or t’other!

Tablecloths, tutorials, and more

Heaps to share today…

First, I've received in the mail today samples of bullion fringe for my matzah cover. It's nearly Passover, and I must get this done. Here's a picture of the samples. I'm leaning towards no. 2 or no. 5. What do you think? No. 5 is a duller gold than that of the fabric & trim, but I think it looks nice. It's a very nice quality fringe. The pearl whites look really nice too, No. 2 being the better quality. So I'm not sure. Click on the images to see up close.

Next bit of news… I've nearly completed my first tutorial for this blog. I've been sewing a tablecloth for one of my 25projects for 2010, but I'm now stuck. The fabric I had originally planned to use for the border of the cloth, no longer looks right, and I don't have anything else in the cupboard. It'll take either a trip to Amitié, or an online purchase to finish this one. Won't be long. Promise. That's why I've put passwords on the tutorial pages, so you'll have to be patient till I finish them :)

Also, I've pulled out the fabric I bought ages ago for another tablecloth. A bit more work to it, and I'll be making matching appliquéd napkins as well. Here's the fabric…

Last bit of news… I've begun making enquiries about venues for the first meeting of the Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild in April. One really strong possibility that I think will be perfect. Not too far from me, a superb new large bright hall. Reasonable rates. Easty to find. Good parking. Just gotta wait to hear back from Gail to tell me if we can have it, then the work begins. I'll need to have a Certificate of Currency for our public liability insurance. Which of course, we don't have. So I'll have to register our guild as a not-for-profit organization first, which means getting an ABN, then get the insurance. Heaps to do!

To tutorialize or not to tutorialize!

Well, I finally got the first side of my tablecloth done. I'm very excited about it, and wish I had photos and all already, but I don't. You wanna know why? Because I decided I'd write it up as a tutorial, and so I've been writing up a pdf. What do you think? It's a very simple pattern really, but given that I've spent .. well .. significant brain time on figuring out exactly how I was going to make a square cloth for my 120cm square dining table, pondering on the type of seam I should use, etc, I thought you might like it if I wrote it up as a tutorial. What do you think?
